Giostra del Saracino, Arezzo. This is a Game of Chivalry of medieval origins. A cavalier, armed with a lance, faces his enemy ( in reality a life sized puppet resembling a Saracen) while in the background there is the dramatic roll  of the drums and the display of the flag-wavers.

Festa della Rificolona,(Florence). Takes place the 7th of September, the vigil of the birthday of the Virgin Mary, on this day the children run from every corner of the city into the Main Square( Piazza della Santissima Annunziata) carrying paper lanterns with candles inside.

Palio della Balestra, Sansepolcro( Arezzo). This is a parade in costume accompanied by professional flag wavers which is part of a competition of firing the crossbow between the team of Sansepolcro and the town of Gubbio.

Luminara di Santa Croce(Lucca) on the 13th of September each year the famous relic of the city, a wooden hazel cross named Volte Santo, or Santa Croce, is taken round the town in a torch-lit procession.

Rassegna del Chianti Classico, Greve in Chianti ( Florence). This is the biggest wine festival in the Tuscany area, centred on its own local produce. It takes place on the second weekend of September and the preceding Thursday and Friday.

Mostra  Mercarto Internazionale del’Antiquariato, (Florence). This is one of the most significant antiquarian shows in the world, happening biannually.


Amici della Musica , Florence. This constitutes a series of musical events which brings together some of the best-known names of the International musical scene. The many concerts in the programme occur between April and October in the historic theatre of The Pergola.

Sagra del Tordo, Montalcino. A competition of archery which has been taking place on the last Sunday in October since 1958. This event has origins in the old hunting traditions of this area. The event consists of costume dancing, accordion music and a procession of one hundred and fifty participants beating drums. At the end of the competition the winning borough collects a silver arrow from the Capitano di Campo


Festival dei Popoli, (Florence). The most celebrated festival of cinematography in Tuscany; it takes place between November and December at the Palazzo dei Congressi. Open to all comers, the festival presents films in their original languages with Italian sub-titles. Through its themed components the festival introduces discussion of architecture, immigration, new cults…..

Mercatino dell’Antiquariato,Lucca. On the third weekend of the month in the ancient winding streets of Lucca a fair takes place with more than two hundred and thirty participants, displaying their wares from all over Italy, from every epoch.
